Some people will say that this book is only acclaimed because an Indian female author wrote it. Perhaps there is some truth in that. But it's not a run-of-the-mill 'oh look at how exotic India and Indians are' book. I think anyone who has felt pulled or lost between different countries or cultures regardless of race or immigrant status will be able to indentify with the protagonist and his struggles to some extent. I personally found this to be a heavy book; I couldn't take it all in a few readings. The movie is out as well, though it seems to focus on different aspects and characters than the book does.
